University of Sydney - SUAMS PDF Print E-mail

The Sydney University Association of Malaysian Students (SUAMS) is a recognized non-profit organization established over 50 years ago to assist Malaysian students adapting to life in Australia as well as to promote the Malaysian culture to non-Malaysian students at the University. By providing valuable information and serving as a point of contact to individuals new to both the University and Australia, the Association aims to ease the anxiety and homesickness faced by new students. Like Malaysia, SUAMS' member base is just as diverse and multicultural. Although mainly represented by Malaysians from all ethnic groups, our members also consist of students of other nationalities!

SUAMS is an active participant in cultural and ethnic events such as the annual Malaysia Fest, International Day/Week at the University and other forums, projects and social events aimed at promoting cultural awareness and diversity.

SUAMS also organises social/cultural events, such as Deepavali Night, Rojak Night, bi-annual Welcome BBQs and many others. Culinary-based events such as these provide the opportunity for members to tuck into much-missed Malaysian fare and in turn, for non-Malaysian members to sample a taste of Malaysia. Other social events include dance parties, sports carnivals and picnic days held in conjunction with other Malaysian Student Associations.

Additionally, the Society teams up with other cultural societies to organise social events with the aim of encouraging our members to mingle with other cultures through sport, food or just by `hanging out'. Lastly, the ultimate goal of the Society is to ensure that all members from all walks of life have the time of lives whilst studying at the University of Sydney.
